Kapsia Cave (46 min -46 km)

Kapsia Cave is 15 km away from Tripoli and 1.5 km from Kapsia Village.

The French archaeologist Gustave Fougères firstly discovered this beautiful cave in 1887 while was excavating in ancient Mantineia. The first research of the cave was held on 20 August 1892 by a Greek-French expedition headed by Arcadian county engineer Nicolas Sideridis and two French engineers.

The publication of his research of the cave and the sink-holes of the area in the French scientific journal Spelunga in 1911 made it globally popular.

This publication is the most important Greek speleological article in that period and is the beginning of awakening the interest on research of Greek caves. In 1974 a new Greek-French expedition led by Ioannis Ioannou was held and a new part of the cave was discovered that was unknown to the first researchers.

In the cave were found signs of old floods and a number of pieces of human bones and skulls, covered with mud (half a meter thick) covering the floor of the cave. Also, oil lamps were found that probably belong to the late Antiquity times (4th & 5th century AD). The most wonderful paintings by fossil material from any other known Greek cave are presented in the “chamber of wonders”.

Fire red, ocher yellow and greenish-blue colors mixed with the white stalactites offer a unique spectacle of natural art.
